Sexual dysfunction is extremely common in the general population. It is estimated that approximately 43% of women and 31% of men have some form of sexual dysfunction. The most prevalent male sexual problem is premature ejaculation. There is no agreement on the most common type of sexual dysfunction in women, with some studies reporting hypoactive sexual desire disorder as the most common entity, followed by orgasmic and arousal disorders; whereas other studies report difficulty achieving orgasm and vaginal dryness as the most common type of sexual dysfunction in women. Sexual dysfunction issues can be lifelong or acquired, general or temporary.
Although sexual disorders are common, they are usually misdiagnosed and mistreated in professional treatment. It is also mentioned that clinicians lack expertise of the approach for identifying and evaluating sexual problems. It is frequently advised that treating psychiatrists and collaborating professionals have a thorough understanding of human sexuality and a suitable attitude toward it.
